Two Spaces is One too Many

If you still put two spaces after a period you are showing your age. Most typewriter fonts are mono-spaced fonts meaning that every character takes up the same amount of space. Anyone who learned to type on a typewriter will remember that they were taught to follow a period with two spaces to create a visual break. Computer fonts however are typically proportional fonts which means that the width of each character varies, eliminating the need for the extra space at the end of a sentence.

More importantly, our office staff – especially those responsible for submitting all of the copy for the Newsette to our printer – would be eternally grateful to you if you would eliminate the extra space after the period when you submit articles for publication. They have to remove each and every “extra” before they send it off to be printed.
