Mosquito Spraying – Thursday, September 20, 2012

At the request of the Club, mosquito traps were set at two locations by the Office of Mosquito Control of the Sussex County Department of Environmental and Public Health Services. The traps have been monitored, and the gathered mosquitoes were sent by the Office of Mosquito Control to a laboratory in Trenton for analysis. We have now been advised that West Nile Virus was identified in mosquitoes from one of the traps.

As a result, the Sussex County Department of Environmental and Public Health Services – Office of Mosquito Control will be conducting mosquito spraying on Thursday, September 20, 2013 between the hours of 5 pm and 9 pm. Areas to be sprayed include but are not limited to Lakeside Drive West, Aniwa Road, Manaticut Road, Canadawa Road, Wawayanda Road, Waconia Road, Squam Road, Alturas Road, Lakeside Drive, Onteora Road, Shawondasee Road, Wenatchee Road, Lonaconing Road, and portions of Breakneck Road. The Office of Mosquito Control plans to make Reverse 9-1-1 calls to residences in areas to be sprayed on Wednesday evening.

The Office of Mosquito Control suggests that members review this information to learn more about its mosquito control efforts. The Office may be reached at 973-948-4545. Additional information is available from nj211.org and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

What can you do to help?

  • Check your property to be certain that you are not inadvertently increasing the mosquito population at the lake by allowing standing water to remain there. If you have a bird bath, clean it out every few days to make it less hospitable to these insects. Drain all containers like children’s toys, flower pots, tire swings, etc.
  • Inspect your boats and remove all water that is stagnating within them. Once they are drained, turn the boats over so that water cannot accumulate within them. Be sure to open drainage plugs in sailboats so that water can drain easily as well.
  • Inspect your gutters to be certain that water is not accumulating there.
