We had a visit on November 13 from Community Relations representatives of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) whose primary task is to make sure everybody affected by Hurricane Sandy has the opportunity to register for disaster assistance through FEMA’s Disaster Assistance telephone line – 1-800-621-3362. FEMA has asked that we distribute this information to our Highland Lakes residents.
We have been provided with a FEMA flyer with detailed information on the FEMA assistance registration process. There is a limited registration period so if you are in doubt please call the 800 number as soon as possible to register. When you register you will be given a nine digit registration number. Please save it to a safe place as it grants access back into your file. You may also register with FEMA on the web at http://www.disasterassistance.gov/.
FEMA Community Relations also wants to remind homeowners to call their homeowners’ insurance companies if they have not done so already. If you have registered for FEMA disaster assistance and received a Small Business Administration packet from FEMA, it needs to be filled out in its entirety in order for FEMA to move forward with your claim. Eligibility is on a case-by-case basis. If you have registered and subsequently received a letter of ineligibility, please update your information using the 800 number with information from your private homeowner’s insurance settlement page so that FEMA can focus on your uninsured and under-insured damages, as FEMA is not allowed by law to duplicate your insurance benefits.
