HL Hikers Explore New Wawayanda Trails April 14

The Highland Lakes Hikers Club will be taking to the woods this Sunday, April 14 to enjoy the nearby trails at the Wawayanda State Park. Hikers will meet at 10:30 in the morning at the clubhouse parking lot and carpool over to the park. From there you can expect to enjoy an easy, four mile (approximately) hike on some of Wawayanda State Park’s newly created trails, including Tombstone (where they will make a brief stop to explore the old cemetery), Rattlesnake (named for its winding shape, not its wildlife), Pickle and Pine Trails.

On May 5 the group is scheduled to hike at the Mahlon Dickerson Reservation. The reservation, part of the Morris County park system, is located in Lake Hopatcong. This easy hike is roughly six miles in length and will take hikers along trails (including Highlands Trail), woods, roads and an abandoned railroad bed.

Highland Lakers of all ages who enjoy hiking in the great outdoors are welcomed and encouraged to join in. The HL Hikers Club is an informal, friendly group who look forward to moderate Sunday hikes every three weeks. Each hiker must bring their own water and lunch and wear appropriate hiking shoes. Most hikes will last an average of 4 – 5 hours, which includes waiting, lunch break and/or driving time. Anyone capable of hiking at least 5 miles at a steady, moderate pace is welcome. Hikers may bring their well-behaved dogs, which must be on a leash whenever they walk on a roadway.

2013 Hiking Schedule: Apr. 14, May 5, May 26, June 16, July 7, July 28, Aug. 18, Sept. 8, Sept. 29, Oct. 20, Nov. 10, Dec. 1, Dec. 22
