Lake Inspections and Treatments Scheduled

Solitude Lake Management will be inspecting Lake 3 (Indian Lake) and Lake 5 (Upper West Highland Lake) on Monday, May 7 as the rapid warming of the water column has created unacceptable floating mat algae conditions. Treatments are planned. The Club generally avoids treatments in the spring when cold water algae, predominately spyrogyra, emerges as this beneficial algae consumes nutrients in the water column and generally dissipates as water temperatures rise and nutrient availability decreases. Recent heat conditions coupled with bright sunlight have accelerated growth and conditions have changed from manageable to unacceptable. Here’s some information about the life cycle of spyrogyra from the Wisconsin Bureau of Science Services.
