UPDATE July 23rd – BEACH 5 REMAINS CLOSED

LAKE 4 – UPPER EAST HIGHLAND LAKE  – BEACH CLOSURE

POTENTIAL HAB – AVOID CONTACT WITH THE WATER

Beach 5 has been closed to swimming until further notice. Owners on Upper East Highland Lake are strongly cautioned to avoid contact with the water until this Advisory is lifted.

The Club received notice on Friday, July 9, 2020, that a sample taken near the beach area (Beach 5) on Tuesday, July 6th by Princeton Hydro, LLC yielded a cell count in excess of 80,000 cells per milliliter. This bloom of the cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) may produce the cyanotoxin microcystin.

The ADVISORY NOTICE recommended by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection has been posted at the beach. Fishing and boating (not kayaking, canoeing, and sailing) are the activities that can be safely conducted provided no contact is made with the water. DO NOT EAT the fish.

Water samples taken on Monday, July 12th indicate a decreased cell-count of blue-green algae, but still above the NJDEP Advisory level.  Solitude Lake Management treated Lake 4 on Thursday, July 15th.  Follow up water samples were taken on Tuesday, July 20th and the results received today, continue to indicate cell counts above the recommended reopening level.  Beach 5 will reopen only after two successive tests indicate cell counts remain below the recommended action level.

Further updates will be posted here as information becomes available.
