Athletic and Recreational Programs
Highland Lakes is all about diversity, and if one of the more popular sports doesn’t capture your enthusiasm, there’s a wide variety of other sports and activities going on throughout most of the year, including:
• Basketball
• Bocce
• Bowling
• Golf Outtings
• Soccer
• Toddler Hiking
• Women’s Volleyball
• Walking
• Water Aerobics
Basketball
Basketball for kids (ages 8-11) meets on Mondays during July at 5:00pm-6:00pm for practicing the basics, and older players (ages 12-14) come out to play and sharpen their skills from 6:00pm-7:00pm. If there are enough players, teams are organized for scheduled games. All games are held on the courts located near the Beach 1 parking lot. For more information, contact Athletic Director Pat Eckhart at 973-557-6824.
Bocce
The Bocce court by the Clubhouse park is in full swing every Thursday at 1:00pm (weather-permitting) from late spring through early fall. New and experienced players are welcome to join the group. For more information, contact Shirley Bond at 973-764-1140.
Bowling
For more than 30 years, women of all ages and abilities have been gathering on Wednesday mornings at PinStreet@Warwick (formerly Frontier Lanes) on Route 94 in Warwick, NY, to display their bowling expertise. Teams of three begin in July and bowl for eight weeks. Our focus leans more toward having fun and socializing than developing bowling prowess, however we do celebrate our achievements on the last day of competition with a luncheon and presentation of trophies and minor prize monies. Great fun is had by all. For more information about participating, fees, or childcare concerns, contact Pat Wootton 973-764-3749 or Judi Sunda 973-764-3069.
Golf Outings
The annual Ladies Golf Outing, which is usually held on the second Tuesday of August, is a 9-hole event held at a local golf course — the entire event (as well as the award lunch that follows it) is organized by the previous year’s winner. For more information, contact Sue Buruchian. The Ray Loughren Sr. Memorial HLCC Men’s Golf Outing is held on the first Friday of August. For more information, contact Ray Loughren 973-764-4216 or Mike Sweeney 973-764-7306.
Soccer
Weekly soccer for fun meets on Friday mornings at 9:00am on Field #1. Adult and teen volunteers offer instructions in basic ball handling for young children (ages 5-8), and advanced techniques for older children (ages 9-12). Everyone child who shows up gets to play in a short game and show off their inner Pelé. For more information, contact XXXXX at 973-764-xxxx.
Toddler Hiking
Little people rocking serious hiking gear meet every Tuesday morning at x:xxam at the Clubhouse for a little journey through the wilderness together. We caravan from the clubhouse to the trail together, arriving at our location at 10:00am. We try to keep the trails to 2 miles or less with lots of opportunities for the little hikers to explore their surroundings. If your child is under 2 years old, you might want to bring a carrier until you know how well they’ll handle the hike. (Usually two year olds and up can handle the distance, while the younger toddlers need a break from time to time. Moms, dads, grandparents, and caregivers are all welcome to bring their little ones who do not attend school yet. For more information, contact Kristin Dalelio 973-764-7051.
Women’s Volleyball
Women (ages 18 and over) are invited to join an enthusiastic group of players on Thursday mornings at 10:00am on the Beach 1 utility courts (next to the basketball court and “Beach Hut”). Our zany court antics are recorded in thrilling weekly Newsette articles—come join in the fun!
Walking
Club members interested in taking a 1-2 mile social walk are invited to meet up at the Clubhouse on Mondays at 9:30am to join the Happy Walkers. Different destinations are selected each week (oooh), but dates and times subject to change, so check this website or read the Newsette for details. For more information, contact XXXXX XXX at 973-764-8758.
Water Aerobics
Adults (only) are invited to join us at 9:00 am on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings in the water Beach 1. For more information, contact Athletic Director Pat Eckhart at 973-557-6824.
