Tennis
General Information
Highland Lakes offers competitive and instructional tennis on our new and well-maintained courts, which are located below the parking lots at Beach 1. Tennis players of most ages and all skill levels are invited to participate in one of four different divisions. Coaches are always needed—parents, please hit an ace and volunteer!
Please remember that the courts are reserved for tennis lessons and games during the week, but are open to member matches at other times.
Aces Tennis (ages 13-20)
Teenagers have an opportunity to play in weekly tennis matches on Tuesdays at 6 pm at the Beach 1 courts. This league is set up for match play, with an emphasis on fun as well as competition.
Children’s Tennis (ages 5-8) – updated June 13, 2014
Youngsters meet on Wednesday mornings at the Beach 1 tennis courts. “Beginner Tennis,” for children ages 7-8, meets from 9 am-10 am—the focus for this age group is to fine-tune their skills and play a few matches at the end of their lesson. “Learn to Play,” designed for younger children (ages 5-6), meets from 10 am-11 am. All players are required to bring their own racquets, badge, sneakers and water.
Suggested racquet sizes are
- Ages 5+ / 40-44″ height = 21 inches
- Ages 6+ / 45-50″ height = 23 inches
- Ages 8+ / 50-55″ height = 25 inches
All Children’s Tennis lessons use portable nets that are lower in height and are positioned perpendicular to the permanent nets to provide a shorter playing field. There are also lightly over-sized/low- pressure balls for the younger children that help temper the speed, accept spin and bounce predictably and most importantly, helps keep the balls from going over the fence. Older children work up to using the permanent nets and regular tennis balls.Volunteers are always needed, and you don’t need to play to be of help—we need parents and teens to toss balls to the kids as they learn and practice their strokes. Aprons to carry balls are provided to volunteers. Parents can go to: www.littletennis.com or www.quickstarttennis.com for a very helpful video.
Pre-teens (ages 9-12) – updated June 13, 2014
Boys and girls tennis lessons take place on Monday mornings at the Beach 1 tennis courts. Ages 11-12 meet at 9 am for an hour, and ages 9-10 meet at 10 am for an hour. Every player needs to bring his/her own racquet and drinking water; balls will be supplied. The season focuses on practicing skills and ultimately leads to match play.
Team Tennis
Dust off that tennis racquet and dig that tennis shirt out of storage—it’s time for a new season. Adult Team Tennis, which started back in 1978, meets every Saturday morning from 9 am-11 am at the Beach #1 courts. Matches and playtime are based on the number of players who show up. Players of all levels—new, old, good, great, and “um, not so much” are invited.
