Mandatory Septic Pumping

Regular septic pumping is the #1 recommended step we can take as homeowners to protect our lakes. Nationally recognized lake management experts, along with studies conducted here in Highland Lakes, strongly recommend routine inspection and maintenance of septic systems to prevent harm to lake health. Proper maintenance can also save you thousands by avoiding costly septic failures and prolonging your system’s lifespan.
The one-time $50 account credit for septic pumping has expired as of September 30, 2025.
However, septic pumping is still required.
Members must provide proof of septic pumping to accounting@hlcc.org no later than April 1, 2026.
The septic pumping must have occurred between April 1, 2023 and March 30, 2026.
Failure to provide proof by the deadline will result in a $500 fine for the first offense, with increasing fines for continued noncompliance.
All septic systems, including newer advanced filtration types, must be pumped every 3 years. No exceptions.
The NJ DEP’s “A Homeowner’s Guide to Septic Systems” provides more tips on keeping your septic system running efficiently and explains why systems fail. In addition to pumping every three years, following these best practices can help maintain a healthy septic system.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, freshwater lakes, rivers, and ponds are especially vulnerable to phosphorus contamination from failing septic systems. When multiple failing systems are clustered near water bodies, the impact can be severe. That’s why proper septic care is crucial for protecting Highland Lakes.
